The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural drama-horror television series developed by Kevin Williamson, based on the book series of the same name by L. J. Smith. The series follows the events in the town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a small town that is haunted by supernatural beings. In this town lives a seventeen years old young woman named Elena Gilbert, portrayed by Nina Dobrev, who perfectly resembles Katherine Pierce, a vampire who lived in Mystic Falls in the 19th century. In 1864, Katherine was loved by two brothers: Stefan, portrayed by Paul Wesley and Damon Salvatore, portrayed by Ian Somerhalder, and she actually felt only a deep affection for them (which is what vampires believe is love). Because she was unable to choose the one whom she wanted to spend centuries with, she turned them both down. As vampires, Stefan and Damon lived very different lives: Stefan started seeking redemption for his past sins, for a yet unknown reason; while Damon found in the evil side his true nature, still able to be loyal and feel affection, he became an amoral, vicious, sadistic, careless evil vampire. The return of the Salvatore vampires in Mystic Falls and Stefan's joining Elena's life will create havoc in town. When The Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW Television Network on September 10, 2009, it attracted the largest audience of any series since the network began in 2006.[1] On February 16, 2010, The CW announced that it had renewed the show for a second season, which premiered on September 9, 2010.

The show initially received average reviews, but critics agreed that the series improved over the course of the season; the second season premiered to generally favorable reviews. The show has received numerous award nominations, winning a People's Choice Award and seven Teen Choice Awards. Dawn Ostroff has mentioned a spin-off that could possibly happen in a few years.[

The Awakening

Elena is a high school golden girl who's used to getting what she wants. When she meets handsome, haunted Stefan, he struggles to resist her for fear that his dark secret is too much for her to handle. He's torn by guilt over his past, and mindful of the threat that his vengeful brother, Damon, poses to anyone Stefan gets close to. Soon Elena finds herself torn between two brothers, and in terrible danger.

The Struggle

Elena quickly realizes that the only thing more dangerous that being in love with a vampire is being desired by two. As Stefan struggles to suppress his instinctive thirst, Damon persists in his quest for Elena's heart. A dark turn of events forces Elena to risk her mortality to save one of her immortal suitors.

The Fury

As Elena comes to grips with the consequences of her devotion to Stefan, a vampire hunter descends on the town, determined to eradicate its immortal infestation. Soon, the hunters become the hunted. Stefan, Elena, and Damon must work together to trace the new evil that's befallen Fell's Church back to its mysterious origin.

Dark Reunion

Elena tries to warn her friends that they're in danger, but she's powerless to save them from the tragedy in store for Fell's Church. When a twist of fate reunites Elena and her true love, she may be granted a second chance at the life she's always dreamed of.

The Return: Nightfall

Now much more than human, Elena returns with powers and gifts that were bestowed on her in the afterlife. What's more, her blood makes her irresistible to any vampire. Stefan struggles to keep Elena safe, but Damon's insatiable desire for power includes making Elena his princess of darkness. When Stefan is lured away from Fell's Church, Elena is left to choose for herself

The Return: Shadow Souls

Demonic spirits are wreaking havoc in Fell's Church. While Elena's friends Bonnie and Meredith explore the evil that has taken over their town, Elena must rely on Damon to help rescue Stefan. Placing Stefan's life and her own in Damon's hands is a perilous move, but it's the only choice Elena has.
